The Danube below Budapest is much less well known to cycle tourists than the Austrian and German sections of the river. Although the countryside is less spectacular, the welcome you will be given in the rural towns and villages is unforgettable. You will see a different facet of a warm and hospitable rural Europe.
From Budapest to Belgrade, EuroVelo 6 crosses the Pannonian Plain. Oxbow lakes formed by ancient meanders of the Danube provide a habitat for multitudes of birds that can be admired in the numerous national parks along the route.
EuroVelo 6 leaves the Hungarian capital along a cycleway on the right bank of the river that takes you onto an enormous island between the two arms of the Danube. The construction of embankments has enabled farmers to cultivate the fertile silts accumulated by the river. Vast industrial-scale farms suited to European farming policies are interspersed with small, family holdings. In Hungary, horse-drawn carts are still a common feature of the rural landscape.
From Batina, on the Hungarian border, to Ilok there are two EuroVelo 6 routes, one in Croatia, on the right bank of the Danube, the other in Serbia, on the left bank.
On the Croatian side, the itinerary along the Danube is already mostly signposted along tracks and minor roads. From Batina to Osijek, a 40-km section of the route along the river’s embankments provides a grandstand view of the world-famous Kopacki rit nature reserve, allowing you to admire the numerous species of birds that have made their home in the park.
Just after Vukovar, the itinerary makes a detour to a monument commemorating the disasters of the Serbo-Croatian war. Although the scars still run deep, it is universally accepted that cycle tourism can play a role in bringing the two peoples together.
At Ilok, which provides a superb vantage point from which to survey the river, the route once again crosses the Danube and heads back into Serbia. Wine has been produced in Ilok since the time of the Roman Emperor Probus and the town has some excellent wineries!
Croatia has developed a network of accommodation for cyclists, including hotels, campsites and bed and breakfasts.
Apatin, a mere 25km from the Hungarian border, is the first large town in Serbia to be visited by EuroVelo 6. Apatin is a port that used to be inhabited exclusively by descendants of German immigrants who arrived in the 18th century.
The two main points of entry and exit of the route are Budapest and Belgrade.
Access to these three trains can be done easily from Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, northern France.

Many bus companies offer international scheduled services to Vienna, Budapest, Belgrade from most European cities. Officially bikes are excluded in most companies, but in practice they often accept them as checked baggage, disassembled in a cardboard box or a bag.
A lot of international flights connect Budapest and Belgrade to major European cities.
