Nevers > Bourbon-Lancy

illust-longue-bourbon.jpg

91 km - Nature is all around you between the Loire and Burgundy. We'll travel away from Nevers, the City of Dukes and then the Capital of Nivernais, dominating the Loire, to go deeper into Burgundy, dotted with well-preserved villages nestling among the green hillsides.

Access

by train

From Nevers, around nine trains run every day to Dijon, and eight go to Tours and Bourges. There are also regular trains to Paris.
Setting off from the Decize, nine trains per day go to Nevers.

For more informations: TER (regional trains in France) or Mobigo (Burgundy Public transport)

Itinerary

In Nevers, we will follow the path along the Canal branch, towards Sermoise-sur-Loire, then Chevenon, using the Canal alongside the Loire. We continue to Fleury-sur-Loire and Decize. Please note that the portion around Decize is not yet surfaced, but the path starts again just after, alongside the Nivernais Canal. It then branches off to the right, after about 8 km, towards Cronat, taking an unmarked route. It then continues along a back road to get to Bourbon-Lancy.

Saint-Cyr Cathedral

The edifice is made up of an amazing jumble of five buildings: there are two chancels, one Roman and the other Gothic. In this basilica, visitors will find almost all periods of French sacred art here, from the between the 6th century baptistery to contemporary stained glass windows. The tower overlooking the sacred edifice dominates the whole town.

The Ducal Palace
This former residence, listed as an historical monument since 1840, nevertheless remains in use - it plays host to town councils, some 200 meetings, seminars and receptions and fifteen exhibitions each year.

Old town center
It would be an excellent idea to stroll through the picturesque streets that form the historic heart of Nevers. The Rue du Moulin d’écorce, the Rue des Belles-lunettes, the Rue des Ratoires, the stairs in the Rue du Calvaire and the Rue Casse-cou are typical of the Middle Ages and offer visitors a real glimpse into the past.

The Chruch of Saint-Etienne
Built by the monks of Cluny in the late eleventh century in tan limestone from the region, it has scarcely been affected by the ravages of time.
This church is a true testament to the spirit of the first great Western art.

Les fonds bouillants
This place derives its name from both the sparkling mineral water springs, exploited between 1895 and 1975, and from the Boyen people from the region.

Barge trips
Why not get out of the saddle for a while and enjoy a little trip on the water aboard the a typical Nivernaise 15 metre-long barge?

After strenuous activity, it's time for a bit of pampering - relax in one of four spa-water springs, with high-tech equipment to treat rheumatism and cardiovascular ailments.

The Belfry
The belfry is still used as the main gate to the walled city dating back to the Middle Ages. At its inauguration in 1398 by Philip II "the Bold", then Duke of Burgundy, it was equipped with a drawbridge. It still has a functioning clock today - people call it the clock tower.
