Paray-le-Monial > Montceau-les-Mines

illust-longue-montceau

40 km - We are gradually leaving behind the banks of the Loire along the Canal du Centre, our constant companion of this stage. The 112km-long waterway, bordered by three ports, bridges the gap between the Saône and the Loire, between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.

Access

by train

Around six trains per day operate between Ciry-le-Noble, Génelard, Paray-le-Monial and Dijon.

Museum of Sacred Art
Behind the white neo-classical façade, unexpectedly juxtaposed to the rustic town, this museum offers an interesting mix of genres: ornaments from church frontages of different periods, paintings inspired by Egyptian and Biblical times, Latin inscriptions - this is a mixed collection that will fascinate history buffs.

Basilica

paray-le-monial - havang

This Clunian foundation was built by Cluniac architects during the latter half of the 11th century. It still cuts an imposing stance, a narthex flanked by two massive square towers, on the rue de la Visitation.

Digoine Castle
Although the building is well worth a visit, you will also enjoy a nice walk through the vast landscaped park that surrounds it, between the pond, the French garden, rows of orange trees in bicentennial boxes and countless palm trees.

Brickworks
In a remarkable setting alongside the canal, visitors can explore a factory from yesteryear, with its tall chimneys and many machines still in their original positions.

The Chavannes Washery
It would be difficult pass by without noticing this mineral processing centre. The washery looks like a huge industrial cathedral, whose buildings are divided into several levels over an area of 8 square kilometres.
