Itinerary
Leaving Orléans, cyclists have a choice of two itineraries. The southern itinerary - Loire by Bike - rejoins the route that runs along the river. To the north, an alternative itinerary is available using a path that starts following the Loire, but forks off a little further up towards the Orléans canal, leading straight to the small village of Donnery. Both routes ultimately lead to Saint-Denis-de-l’Hôtel. This is the way to get to Germigny-des-Prés, going via Châteauneuf-sur-Loire. Please note: trails are not always developed in this area! Next to the river, we will finally arrive at Sully-sur-Loire.
Tourist destinations
Orléans
La place du Martroi
This has to be the most beautiful square in the city, with the old chancellery of Philippe, Duke of Orléans on one side, and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry on the other, right in the centre of town.
Sainte-Croix Cathedral
These are the oldest remains in France. The crypt holds the foundations of a 4th century basilica. But restoration, ordered by Henri IV and his successors, also provide a striking example of flamboyant Gothic art.
Châteauneuf-sur-Loire
Loire Maritime Museum
Arranged on three levels, this is a comprehensive maritime history of the Loire. Not to be missed is a collection of earthenware from Nevers, and prints that plunge the visitor into the tradition of river navigation.
Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire
Abbey of Fleury
This community, founded in around 630 on the banks of the river, was dispersed in the French Revolution, before being reformed in 1944 by a group of Benedictine monks who came from Morvan. Today, 38 monks still live a life of prayer and contemplation here, respecting the word of Saint Benedict.
Sully-sur-Loire
Castle Fortess
At the gateway to the Valley of Kings, this castle, built in the heart of a vast park, used to be the residence of the first Duke of Sully.
