Sully > Châtillon

illust-longue-giens

45 km - This is a stunning part of the stage. We'll discover Gien, hanging over the Loire, and Briare, with its famous canal bridge. The villages built around Roman churches, ports and bridges. An idyllic setting for cycling!

Access

by train

Departing from Gien and Briare, the Paris-Nevers line has space available for bikes. Please note: only available by reservation!

  • Itinerary

We'll leave Sully-sur-Loire cycling next to the riverbank. We then swing by Lion-en-Sullias, and later on come to Saint Gondon. A short distance before we get to Gien, the asphalt gives way to cobblestones - not so pleasant on a bike. But never mind - we're nearly there. We get to Châtillon by a dedicated lane after going past Gien and then Briare.

This enormous cut stone bridge has twelve arches to support a walkway almost 300 metres long.

Le château d’Anne de Beaujeu
Anne de Beaujeu had this castle built in the late 15th century, on the remains of a medieval edifice of which just one square tower remains on the southern face: the "Charlemagne" tower. Joan of Arc stayed here for several days in 1429.

Canal Bridge
The Briare canal - 57km long and punctuated by 32 locks, serves as a junction between the lateral canal in the Loire and the Loing canal. The Briare canal bridge enables this body of water to transit the Loire to avoid hazards when navigating the Loire river. Constructed in 1890 by the Eiffel company, this piece of civil engineering is the longest of its type in the world, at 663 metres.
