Saint-Florent > Angers

50 km - This stage has two points of particular interest: a trip along the length of the Ile de Chalonnes (nearly 10 km) and the path that runs along the Maine to arrive at Angers (also about ten kilometres). Angers is the gateway to the valley of châteaux.

Itinerary

From Saint-Florent to Montjean-sur-Loire (15 km), the marked provisional route is a little frustrating because the Loire levee blocks view towards the river. But as soon as we leave Montjean, we'll cross a walkway to the Ile de Chalonnes, the longest on the river. This shaded route is extremely pleasant. At Chalons-sur-Loire, continue crossing to the north bank and the rejoin the route for Possonnière and Savennières. At Savennières, the Ile Béhuard is worthy of a small detour. At Bouchemaine, where the Loire and the Maine join together, the Loire by Bike route will encourage us to continue along the Loire to Les Ponts-de-Ce but, if you want to pay a visit to Angers, it is better to take the pretty little trail that goes up the Maine, right next to the water. After the Maine lake, turn right to get to central Angers.

Tourist destinations

Museum of local history and wars of Vendée
This museum has five rooms in an old chapel, presenting a record of the turbulent history of Saint-Florent-le-Vieil, from its Neolithic and Roman origins to the 80-year Viking occupation and the Abbey and the Vendée wars.
Alongside these historical accounts, you can explore many different collections: models of boats used on the Loire, iconography of the Loire, Angers headdresses, local folk crafts from the 19th century. This museum sees itself as a people's museum mainly comprised of loans and donations from local residents.

Mont Glonne Abbey
The abbey church, dating mainly from the 17th century, is a listed historical monument. It contains the tomb of Vendée General Bonchamp.

Wineries
There a a great many wineries in this area.

Ile Béhuard
The only island town on the Loire, the Ile Béhuard is located in a UNESCO World Heritage Site area. The Loire makes a very strong mark on the appearance of the town landscape, with the formation of several tiny islands, with frequent flooding from December to May. All this has influenced the life and structure of the island and the landscape. Must see - the church that Louis XI ordered to be built.

Historic centre
The wealth of Angers' heritage and the care taken to show it in its best light have given the city the prestigious label of a City of Art and History, awarded for its architecture and heritage.

The Castle
Enter by the huge drawbridge across the moat and explore the governor's lodge, the dungeons, the battlements and enjoy the unobstructed view over the city. The architecture shows the course of the site's development across the centuries, with the construction of the fortress and its towers by the young King Louis, the Royal Lodge, the chapel and the Châtelet (small scale castle) - all built by the Dukes of Anjou. The interior of the castle plays host to the attractive residence of the Dukes of Anjou, made up of Gothic buildings, gardens and can even boast a few vines.
