By coach
The cheapest way to get to the route from Western Europe is by long-distance coach. Several companies offer attractive fares (around €200 return). There are direct coach services to this part of the route from Turnu-Severin in the west and from Constanta in the east.
By plane
There are numerous international flights to Bucarest, Sofia and Belgrade from other major European cities. The cheapest fares from Europe are around €300 return. Bucarest is 65km from the route.
By train
Getting to the route with a bicycle using international train services is relatively long and difficult. The two main access points are Vidin in the west, which is connected to Belgrade via Sofia (night train from Belgrade to Sofia + 5-hr train journey from Sofia to Vidin) and to Bucarest in Romania, which is 65km from Giurgiu.

Most of the towns along the route have very good value small hotels. Campsites are rare but there are a great many bed and breakfasts, which are usually very welcoming.


The route does not include any purpose-built cycleways but traffic levels on the roads are always quite low. The route has been subject to detailed reconnaissance.
